I'm Jen. I raise and show rabbits, I love almost everything sci-fi, I'm a math major, Jack O'Neill and GIR are my spirit animals, and Jon Stewart is my one true love. Some fandoms you'll see are Sherlock, Stargate, Criminal Minds, Doctor Who, Top Gear, Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica, QI, and Mark Sheppard (Yeah, he is his own fandom). My ask box is always open and I love receiving messages.
I have a 24-hour rule when it comes to TV show spoilers: I won't post anything that contains spoilers until 24 hours after it airs on the West coast (unless it's under a read more). For shows from the UK, I'll wait until 24 hours after it has aired there. After that though, it's fair game.

Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
- I can not afford to pay 80 dollars + a month for Comcast, and it’s really a fucking luxury in a economically stunted time like this. This out dated idea of paying for channels you don’t want is just that….out dated. Cable providers are falling behind on the times and they know it.
- I subscribe to both Netflix instant and Hulu. Unfortunately, neither service is allowed complete streaming rights to all shows, so it’s a take what you can get issue. There are some shows out there that you simply can’t watch legally without access to cable or shelling 40 bucks + out on a DVD a year after it airs on TV.
- Both cable and streaming services are still incredibly limited and isolate the viewer. Case in point. My boyfriend and I wanted to start watching Alcatraz. We were at his mother’s house. She has comcast on demand. They had two episodes of Alcatraz, that being the two latest episodes. So we check Hulu. It was a better selection, but the first two episodes were missing [expired as they say]. Netflix isn’t allowed to instantly stream ANY on air seasons, so that was out. Basically, if you want to try out an on air show, the only possible way for you to catch up on that program is to pirate. There is literally NO OTHER WAY. I’m not sure why though. You’d think these companies would want to at least have the first episode available for those interested in catching up. Unless your show is a sitcom or light hearted dramady, you can’t expect new fans to emerge if they are coming in halfway through the series run. Most shows lose viewers after the pilot airs. Not gain them.
- Not related to me, but many, many fans are not from the US, who would probably be happy to watch a few advertisements from their home country to stream a show. Hulu and other streaming companies need to look into a way to financially gain with non US viewers. These people are unquestionably going to pirate. There is no way for many of them to watch the shows they love legally. Many shows aren’t even ever released on TV or DVD overseas.
- Basically, there is no instant service that truly allows me to stream the shows that I want to watch, avoid paying for networks I don’t care about, and has a sizable and respectable backlog for new shows that allows me to catch up if needed be. I would be paying for literally all of my media if I had access to it, but I don’t; and until I do, I am going to keep making up for that by pirating. It’s about time media companies get into this century and accept that many people are watching these shows from the internet.
Now don’t get me wrong- I don’t pirate everything. Like I said, I pay for Netflix. I pay for Hulu. I do my best to enjoy as many TV series on those services as possible. If they were allowed to carry more..if they were licensed to really provide a full service to their customer equal to that of cable TV, this wouldn’t be an issue. I don’t pirate because I want free stuff. I do it because I don’t have other options.
